The Business Model Canvas is a strategic management template created by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur in their book "Business Model Generation". It describes a business on a single page across 9 building blocks: key partners, key activities, key resources, value propositions, customer relationships, channels, customer segments, cost structure and revenue streams.
The Business Model Canvas (Osterwalder) is broader and better suited to established companies or business models being scaled — it covers partners, resources and activities. The Lean Canvas (Maurya) replaces those with problem, solution, key metrics and unfair advantage, and is more suited to early-stage startups searching for product-market fit. Use the Business Model Canvas when your model is taking shape; use the Lean Canvas Generator when you're still validating the problem.
