You're paying for LivePlan, or about to, and something doesn't fit: a subscription for a plan you'll write once, no free trial, or an AI that does less than you expected. This guide picks a replacement based on the exact reason you're leaving, and shows what each option really costs over 12 months.

One disclosure before we start: SeedAngels is one of the tools below. We tell you where it fits and where it doesn't, the same way we do for every other option. If you're not tied to LivePlan and just want the right tool, start with our full comparison of business plan software; this article answers a narrower question: what should replace LivePlan?

Every price below was checked on October 2, 2026 on each vendor's official pricing page. Prices change often, so check before you buy.

Quick answer: the best LivePlan alternative for your situation

For most founders leaving LivePlan, the best alternative is SeedAngels: it writes a complete, bank-ready business plan and a matching pitch deck from your own numbers, for €90 one-time instead of $180 to $240 a year. If your reason for leaving is different:

  • Leaving because of the subscription price → SeedAngels (€90 one-time) or Venturekit Pro ($8/month billed annually).
  • You want a free tool → Venturekit's free plan, or Bizplanr's free PDF plan.
  • You want the closest replacement, with more AI → Upmetrics.
  • You need investor-grade analysis (DCF, stress tests) → PrometAI Investor-Grade.
  • You're applying for an SBA loan → ProjectionHub.
  • You're still validating the idea → IdeaBuddy.

LivePlan in 2026: what you get and what you pay

LivePlan is made by Palo Alto Software, founded in 1988 and based in Eugene, Oregon. Launched in 2011, it remains one of the reference tools for small business planning. Here are its plans as of October 2, 2026:

Plan Monthly Billed annually What's included
Standard $20/month $15/month Full forecast (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow), up to 10 what-if scenarios, pitch presentation generator, 550+ sample plans, AI writing assistance, budget-vs-actual dashboards, QuickBooks Online and Xero integration, live onboarding session
Premium $40/month $30/month Standard + AI forecast builder, automated monthly financial analysis, milestone planner, automated board reports
LivePlan Expert (add-on) $30/month – One-on-one video support

Both plans cover one active company and five contributors. There is no free plan and no free trial: LivePlan offers a 35-day money-back guarantee instead.

Contrary to what some alternatives roundups claim, LivePlan does include a pitch generator from the Standard plan. Its real strength is elsewhere: tracking your budget against actual results pulled from your accounting software.

Why people look for a LivePlan alternative

Five reasons come up again and again.

1. A subscription for a plan you write once. Many founders need a business plan for a loan or a funding round, not a monthly management tool. Paying $180 to $240 a year for a document you write once adds up.

2. No free trial. You have to pay to test it. If you only need a structure for a first draft, our free business plan templates in Word give you a complete outline without any software at all.

3. AI writing that goes further elsewhere. LivePlan has an AI writing assistant, but several competitors have built their whole product around AI drafting.

4. Investor deliverables. A fundraise needs a plan, a deck and a valuation that agree with each other. LivePlan doesn't calculate a valuation, so you'll need a separate tool, such as our startup valuation calculator, to estimate your pre-money before you negotiate.

5. Lender-ready depth vs speed. The U.S. Small Business Administration notes that traditional business plans "use a standard structure" and "can be dozens of pages long", and that is what most lenders ask for. Some founders want a tool that gets them there faster; others want more financial depth than LivePlan's entry plan gives them.

The 8 best LivePlan alternatives

Every review follows the same template: what the tool does better than LivePlan, what you give up, the price we checked, and our verdict.

What happened to Enloop? It still appears in many LivePlan alternatives lists, but on October 2, 2026, Enloop's pricing page stated that it is "not currently accepting new registrations". We left it out.

1. SeedAngels: the best LivePlan alternative for a bank or investor package

Best for: founders who need a business plan a banker or an investor will actually read, without paying a subscription for it.

LivePlan gives you a guided builder: you write each section yourself, with AI suggestions. SeedAngels takes the opposite route. You describe your project, validate your Lean Canvas and your own revenue assumptions, and SeedAngels writes the complete business plan for you, in the structure lenders expect, then builds the pitch deck from the same data. You review, edit and send.

Executive summary of a SeedAngels business plan with share capital, loan, project summary and three-year P&L
The page a banker reads first: funding structure, project summary and three-year P&L, all drawn from your own numbers.

What you get that LivePlan doesn't give you:

  • A complete document written from your data: executive summary, market analysis (size, trends, personas, competitors), acquisition strategy for each customer segment, team, strengths and weaknesses. One rule applies to every sentence: nothing is invented, every figure comes from your forecast or from a source in your Lean Canvas.
  • A financial section that is never out of date: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, financing plan, funding need and cap table, read live from your forecast. Change a number and the plan, the deck and the appendices follow.
  • A pitch deck and a valuation in the same package: the deck is generated from the same numbers and includes a valuation slide, which LivePlan doesn't calculate.
  • A one-time price: €90 once, versus $180 to $240 a year for LivePlan Standard. Creating your project, validating it and building your forecast are free; you only pay to unlock the final documents.

Pitch deck Generated from the same numbers Pitch presentation generator
Company valuation Included in the deck Not calculated
Budget vs actual with your accounting No Yes (QuickBooks, Xero)

When LivePlan is still the better fit: if you will track your budget against your books month after month, LivePlan (or Upmetrics) does that. SeedAngels focuses on the plan you need to get financed.

Verdict: if you are leaving LivePlan because you need a credible plan to raise money or get a loan, not another subscription, SeedAngels is the alternative to start with. Build my business plan for free →

2. Upmetrics: the closest like-for-like replacement

Best for: startups and small teams that want LivePlan's feature set with more AI.

Better than LivePlan: stronger AI drafting, hundreds of sample plans, a pitch deck builder and a lower entry price. It is also the only tool on this list that, like LivePlan, tracks your forecast against actuals pulled from QuickBooks or Xero (read-only sync, or an Excel/CSV upload if you don't use accounting software).

What you give up: the human onboarding session and chat support included in LivePlan Standard. Plan-vs-actual tracking may not be part of the entry plan, so check before you subscribe.

Price (checked October 2, 2026): from $14/month billed annually, with a 15-day money-back guarantee.

Verdict: if you like LivePlan but find it expensive or light on AI, this is the most natural move, including if you track your budget against your books.

3. IdeaBuddy: best for idea-stage founders

Best for: founders who haven't validated their idea yet.

Better than LivePlan: a genuine free plan (one idea, one collaborator, 10 AI requests, a financial plan and PDF, Word or Excel export) and tools to structure the idea before you write the plan.

What you give up: the business plan module isn't part of the free plan, and financial depth is lighter than LivePlan's.

Price (checked October 2, 2026): free to start; paid plans billed monthly or annually, with a 15-day money-back guarantee. Paid prices weren't displayed when we checked, so confirm them on IdeaBuddy's site.

Verdict: use it before LivePlan or its competitors, not instead of them.

4. Venturekit: best budget option for US small businesses

Best for: US small businesses that want a lender-ready plan cheaply, and possibly an LLC formed at the same time.

Better than LivePlan: a free-forever plan with unlimited "light" plans and 3 full business plans a month, including lender-ready statements, a financial forecast, a pitch deck and market research. Paid plans cost a fraction of LivePlan's.

What you give up: no accounting sync or budget-vs-actual tracking; it's built for producing plans, not managing a business month to month.

Price (checked October 2, 2026): free; Pro at $8/month billed annually; Agency at $38/month (20 full plans a month). LLC formation is an optional $169/year plus state fees.

Verdict: the cheapest serious alternative if your goal is a plan for a US lender.

5. PrometAI: best for investor-style analysis

Best for: founders preparing for investors who want valuation and stress tests built in.

Better than LivePlan: on its top plan, DCF valuation and stress testing, plus PowerPoint export and NDA and term-sheet templates. LivePlan offers neither valuation nor stress tests.

What you give up: the free tier excludes PDF export, financial dashboards and DCF; the plan that includes DCF costs more than LivePlan Premium on monthly billing.

Price (checked October 2, 2026): free tier (1 plan, 25 AI requests a month); Application-Ready at $55/month (about $25/month billed annually); Investor-Grade at $145/month (about $65/month billed annually).

Verdict: worth it if valuation analysis is the reason you're leaving; overkill for a bank loan.

6. Bizplanr: best for a free AI-generated draft

Best for: a fast, free first draft.

Better than LivePlan: you answer simple questions and download a full business plan as a PDF for free.

What you give up: editing, Word and Excel export, projections and the pitch builder sit in the paid tier, which is sold as "Upmetrics AI": in practice, upgrading Bizplanr means moving to Upmetrics.

Price (checked October 2, 2026): free basic plan; paid plan at $14/month.

Verdict: a good free starting point; if you need more, compare it with Upmetrics directly.

7. Bizplan: best for an all-in-one startup membership

Best for: startups that also want courses, mentors and fundraising tools.

Better than LivePlan: Bizplan is now sold inside Startups.com's "Startups Unlimited" membership, with unlimited business plans and collaborators, plus a library of masterclasses, access to mentor advisors and the Fundable and Launchrock tools. The lifetime option is unusual in this market.

What you give up: no accounting sync; you pay for a bundle, much of which you may not use.

Price (checked October 2, 2026): $29/month, $249/year, or $349 one-time for lifetime access.

Verdict: good value over several years if you'll use the extras; otherwise, a lot of bundle for one plan.

8. ProjectionHub: best for SBA loan applications

Best for: US small businesses applying for an SBA-backed loan.

Better than LivePlan: free, industry-specific financial projection templates (100+, five years), and the option to hand the work to experts. The 7(a) program is "SBA's primary business loan program", and the documents depend on the lender; ProjectionHub is organized around exactly that path, with a free SBA readiness review.

What you give up: it's a projections tool and service, not a full plan writer with AI drafting; the custom plan service is expensive.

Price (checked October 2, 2026): free templates; all templates for $499 one-time; done-for-you projections at $750; custom business plan plus projections at $2,500.

Verdict: the specialist choice if your plan's only job is an SBA loan.

General-purpose assistants like ChatGPT or Claude write well, but they don't replace LivePlan: they have no financial model, and they invent plausible-looking figures unless you constrain them carefully. Our comparison of AI business plan generators goes through that tool by tool.

LivePlan vs the alternatives: side by side

The 12-month cost uses the entry plan that produces a complete business plan, at the prices checked on October 2, 2026.

Tool Free plan Entry price 12-month cost AI writing Full 3-statement forecast Pitch deck Accounting sync Best for
LivePlan No (35-day refund) $20/month $240 ($180 annual) Yes Yes Yes QuickBooks, Xero Ongoing management
SeedAngels Free project setup €90 one-time €90 Yes Yes Yes No Bank or investor package
Upmetrics No (15-day refund) $14/month (annual) $168 Yes Yes Yes QuickBooks, Xero Like-for-like switch
IdeaBuddy Yes (1 idea) See site See site Yes Partial Yes – Idea stage
Venturekit Yes (3 plans/month) $8/month (annual) $96 Yes Yes Yes No Cheapest lender-ready plan
PrometAI Yes (no PDF export) $55/month $660 (~$300 annual) Yes Yes Top plan – Valuation, stress tests
Bizplanr Yes (PDF) $14/month $168 Yes Paid tier Paid tier No Free AI draft
Bizplan No $29/month $348 ($249 annual, $349 lifetime) – Yes – No Startup bundle
ProjectionHub Yes (templates) $499 one-time $499 No 5-year projections No No SBA loans

The 12-month costs use different bases: monthly price × 12, annual plan, or one-time purchase. For a one-off plan, compare the total cost over the time you'll actually use the tool, not the headline price. "–" means we couldn't verify it on the check date.

Head-to-head: LivePlan vs IdeaBuddy, Upmetrics, Bizplan and PlanBuildr

LivePlan vs IdeaBuddy

IdeaBuddy is better if you're still shaping the idea; LivePlan is better once you need a complete, lender-ready financial plan. IdeaBuddy's free plan lets you structure an idea and a first financial plan at no cost, while LivePlan has no free tier but goes much deeper on forecasting, scenarios and budget tracking. Many founders use the first before the second.

LivePlan vs Upmetrics

Upmetrics is better if you want stronger AI for less money; LivePlan is better if you value maturity and included human support. Both produce full forecasts and pitch decks, and both can track your plan against actuals from QuickBooks or Xero. Upmetrics starts at $14/month billed annually against $15 for LivePlan Standard, and pushes AI further.

LivePlan vs Bizplan

Bizplan is better if you want a multi-year startup bundle; LivePlan is better if you want to manage one company's numbers over time. Bizplan comes inside Startups.com's membership, with courses, mentors and a $349 lifetime option. LivePlan focuses on planning and performance tracking, with accounting integrations Bizplan doesn't list.

LivePlan vs PlanBuildr

PlanBuildr is better if you want a simple fill-in-the-blank plan; LivePlan is better if you want AI help and ongoing tracking. PlanBuildr guides you through exercises and "automatically calculates your complete 5-year financial projections", with ten designs to choose from. Its homepage doesn't mention AI or accounting integrations, and it didn't display prices when we checked.

When you should stay on LivePlan

Switching isn't always the right call. Stay if:

  • You track your budget against actuals with QuickBooks or Xero, and it works. According to its Xero App Store listing, LivePlan "syncs with your Xero accounting data in real time". Only Upmetrics offers the equivalent here, so switching would mean rebuilding that tracking for little gain.
  • You manage one company over the long term and use the monthly dashboards, scenarios and automated reports.
  • You want regular human help, which LivePlan offers through its onboarding session, chat support and the Expert add-on.

In those cases, the subscription pays for a management tool, not just a document.

How to switch without losing your work

  1. Download your plan and pitch before you cancel, in every format your plan offers.
  2. Copy your forecast tables. The financial model won't import into another tool, so you'll rebuild it. Our guide to financial forecasting sets out the order to rebuild it in, from sales assumptions to cash flow.
  3. List your assumptions: prices, volumes, costs, hires, funding. That list is what saves you time in the new tool.
  4. Check your subscription date. If it's less than 35 days old, you can still request a refund.
  5. Compare both versions of the forecast before you send anything: same assumptions, same results to within a few dollars.

Conclusion

If you're leaving LivePlan to put a plan in front of a bank or investors, SeedAngels is the alternative we recommend: a complete business plan and pitch deck written from your own numbers, valuation included, for €90 once instead of a yearly subscription. For narrower needs, the others each win on one point: Venturekit on cost, Bizplanr on a free draft, Upmetrics on ongoing planning with more AI, PrometAI on valuation analysis, ProjectionHub on SBA loans.

And if LivePlan already runs your budget alongside your books, staying is often the better choice: a new tool is only worth it if it fixes the problem that made you look.

FAQ

Is there a free alternative to LivePlan?

Yes. Venturekit has a free plan with up to 3 full business plans a month, Bizplanr lets you generate a plan and download it as a PDF for free, and IdeaBuddy has a free plan for one idea, without the business plan module. LivePlan itself has no free plan and no free trial, only a 35-day money-back guarantee. Check what each free tier gates before relying on it for a bank file.

Is LivePlan worth it in 2026?

It is if you'll use it beyond writing the plan: budget-vs-actual tracking synced with QuickBooks or Xero, monthly dashboards and scenario planning. At $20/month ($15 billed annually) for Standard, it's fairly priced for that. If you only need a one-off plan for a loan or a fundraise, a cheaper subscription or a one-time purchase usually costs less over a year.

Does LivePlan have a free trial?

No. LivePlan doesn't offer a free trial; it offers a 35-day money-back guarantee instead, on both the Standard and Premium plans. If you subscribe to test it, set a reminder before day 35 so you can still request a refund if it doesn't fit.

What's the cheapest LivePlan alternative?

Among the paid plans we checked on October 2, 2026, Venturekit Pro at $8/month billed annually ($96 a year) is the cheapest entry point, and its free plan covers simple cases. For a single plan, compare the 12-month total rather than the monthly price: a one-time purchase can cost less than a year of any subscription.

LivePlan vs Upmetrics: which is better?

Upmetrics is better if you want stronger AI writing for less money: it starts at $14/month billed annually and also tracks your plan against actuals from QuickBooks or Xero. LivePlan is better if you value its maturity and the human onboarding and chat support included in Standard. For a one-off plan, Upmetrics usually wins on price.

Can I export my plan from LivePlan before I cancel?

Yes: download your plan and pitch before cancelling, and keep a copy of your forecast tables. The financial model itself won't import into another tool, so list your assumptions (prices, volumes, costs, hires) and re-enter them in the new software. If you subscribed less than 35 days ago, you can still request a refund.
